Our Story

The Chartreux Cat Club UK was formed in October 2015 with the aim to promote and establish the Chartreux as a breed in the UK soon after the Chartreux Recognition Application was accepted by GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy).

But our story began over a year earlier, on 5th of June 2014, when a founder member of the club picked up a male kitten called Jay from Chatterie de l’Etoile du Soir in Lower Normandy. He and his wife fell in love with him and the breed, so in May 2015 he applied to GCCF for the Chartreux to become a recognised breed, which was accepted five months later.

Together with a couple who also owned a male Chartreux, they set up Chartreux Cat Club UK and this website and a Facebook page were created. Despite the Chartreux being little known in the UK, kitten enquiries started to come in almost straight away. The first kitten came to the UK in the spring of 2016 and others soon followed. As Jay was the first male Chartreux to be registered with GCCF, his owner decided that he would also like to have the first registered female and the first registered kittens. So, on 26th October 2015 he brought Lilly de Mithlond to the UK. Lilly and Jay were kept as pets; a life that Jay was used to before Lilly arrived, which worked well. They mated on the 8th of October and five beautiful and healthy kittens were born on 13th and 14th December 2016.

Chartreux owning members of the club got together for the first time at the Supreme Cat Show in Birmingham in October 2016, where six cats were exhibited. The club was also represented in the World of Cats section at the National Pet Show in London in May 2017. Both shows generated a lot of excitement and interest in the breed and owners again showed their Chartreux at the Supreme Cat Show in October 2017.

Having become a Provisional Member of GCCF, the Club worked on formalising a Chartreux Breed Standard and an application for Preliminary Recognition was lodged. This was granted on the 9th of October 2017, and the Chartreux can now be shown in GCCF Cat Show Assessment Classes and can be awarded Merit certificates (if deemed worthy specimens of the breed).

Our aim is to now secure UK Championship Status for the Chartreux. The Club is still in its infancy but so far has earnt 7 full merited cats: Macan de Midilys – 1st GCCF merit cat, Jay de l’Etoile du Soir – 1st GCCF registered cat to win Overall Best in Show, Melkelter Nancy Nicolina – 1st UK bred GCCF merit cat; Lilly de Mithlond, Melkelter Orinoco Flo, Melkelter Ozma and Melkelter Ophelia. Two more are sitting on 3 merits each, Topchart Maja and MasterPlan Nova Star Burst. Norman de Solafre has just earned his first merit.

We are still a fledgling club with clear majority of our kittens being sold as pets, which does make it hard to obtain merits for the club as some new owners are not interested in taking their pets to Cat Shows, but we are determined to get there and are over half way to reaching our goal…
